The edition makes accessible all extant letters written to Jean Paul (1763–1825). It thereby extends the historical-critical edition of the works and letters of Jean Paul begun in the mid-20th century by Eduard Berend to include a fourth section. The letters from Jean Paul (Third Section) are placed alongside the letters of response, thus for the first time fully presenting the author's entire preserved correspondence.
