Unsere Sprache ist nicht überall gleich, nicht einmal die Standardvarietät. Statt eines vermeintlich einheitlichen Hochdeutsch haben sich im deutschsprachigen Raum verschiedene Ausprägungen (Varietäten) entwickelt: deutsches, österreichisches und schweizerisches Standarddeutsch. Jede Varietät enthält spezifische Merkmale (Varianten), die nicht immer für die Sprecherinnen und Sprecher der jeweils anderen Varietäten unmittelbar verständlich sind. Der Band führt in die Grundlagen der Variationslinguistik ein und präsentiert die Standardvariation im Deutschen. Neben ihrer linguistischen Beschreibung wird ihre Entstehung thematisiert sowie ihre Bedeutung für die persönliche und nationale Identität, ihre Darstellung in Wörterbüchern und ihre Relevanz für den Deutschunterricht. Ein Blick über den Tellerrand auf andere plurizentrische Sprachen rundet die Einführung ab.
