Bankettgebäude in griechischen Heiligtümern
Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)
The consumption of sacrificial meat was a central part of Greek cult festivals. People used to dine outdoors or in temporary structures specifically built for the festivals. Several sanctuaries, however, also included permanent buildings furnished with dining couches to accommodate the sacred meal. These so-called sacred banquet halls used to be an integral part of the infrastructure of the sanctuaries starting from the seventh century B.C. to the Hellenistic period. The author considers their architectural form, their placing within the sacred space and the literary sources in order to examine the functional context of these buildings and to identify the select group of worshippers who was admitted to dine in those rooms.
