In 1071 bishop Gundekar II. of Eichstätt (1057-1075) started the Gundekarianum as a pontificale. His successors kept on using this book for six centuries like a chronicle. Apart from being on the largest collections of prayers, ordinations, masses, excommunications, etc. that has come to us from this time, the Gundekarianum contains several miniatures which date from 1072 to 1517. These are mostly the images of the bishops of Eichstätt but also pictures of saints and richly ornamented initials. These pictures make the codex an unique source not only for historians but as well for art historians.
