In 2009/10, four seasons were conducted in the Roman fort located 280 km south of Tripoli. The focus of the interdisciplinary project, funded by LMUexcellent, was the fort, built above an oasis for a legionary vexillation around AD 200. The garrison performed control and surveillance tasks and was responsible for the security along the caravan route to the Fezzan. The history of research in the Tripolitanian frontier zone (limes Tripolitanus) from 1819-1996, the geodetic survey of Gheriat el-Garbia and its surroundings based on radar data from the German earth observation satellite (TerraSAR-X) and the Roman surveying scheme of the fort are presented. The architectural elements provide information about the sophisticated architectural design of the Severan fort. The ceramic survey, the coins and the radiocarbon analyses (14C) provide information on the history of the fort and its occupation not only in the 3rd century, but also on the dating of the reoccupation and restoration of the fort in Late Antiquity.

This study focuses on the wide range of vessel forms and decoration of the rare appliqué-decorated red slip ware from northern Tunisia, and especially the appliqué-, relief- and stamp-decorated sigillata made in the most imprtant mid and late Roman potteries at Sidi Marzouk Tounsi in central Tunisia. The exceptional collection of vessels accumulated by K. Wilhelm forms the basis of this work and is presented here in a catalogue documenting 138 complete vessels and 104 fragments, including numerous unique forms and motifs of decoration. The analysis of the appliqué and relief decoration with pagan, allegoric and early Christian motifs documents the iconographic change of themes over the centuries. It is particularly noteworthy to highlight the end of production of the late Roman mould-made, relief-decorated red slip ware not before the middle of the 6th century AD.

The Roman site Submuntorium/Burghöfe is situated on a plateau of a promontory above the valleys of the rivers Danube and Lech, about 30 km north of the provincial capital of Augusta Vindelicum/Augsburg. It represents one of the most important military sites of the province of Raetia during the early and late Roman periods. The excavations, conducted between 2001 and 2007 by the University of Munich, offered new information on the sequence of the early Roman timber forts and the extension of the civil settlement (vicus) in the 1st c. AD. Of particular importance is the localization of the late Roman fortification, which was built around 300 AD on the promontory, as well as its adjacent artisanal settlement where ferrous and non-ferrous metals were processed. The end of the fort may be dated to the middle or to the third quarter of the 5th c. AD.

This book is based on a German-Arab colloquium held in Amman in September 2013, where current excavation and research results on death and burial from Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt were presented. For the first time, Arab and Near Eastern scholars were able to discuss the main features and differences in the development of funerary practices of the dead in Roman, Byzantine and Islamic times, mainly based on archaeological sources. It also reports on the processing of old excavations and summary studies on local or regional burial customs. Apart from ten lectures presented in the colloquium, five other contributions by international scholars have been included. Among the more prominent places presented here are Palmyra, Beirut, Petra, Gerasa, Alexandria, Hermupolis and St. Paul's Monastery of Deir el-Bakhît (Thebes-West).

The Archaeology of the Roman Provinces is a young discipline. As an academic subject, it has rapidly achieved great successes in the field of excavation and research and has increased our knowledge to a degree that barely keeps pace with the theoretical mastery of the results. The rapid development of scientific methods has contributed significantly to the self-assurance of the subject and opened up new perspectives for future research. Now and again it has been noted that Provincial Roman archeology has neglected its scientific foundations, methods and theories by omitting a reflection of their concepts and the validity of their findings. In the everyday research and teaching process we seldom worry about the meaning of terms such as analogy and hypothesis, chronology and periodization, or other abstract concepts. This volume deals with the basics of scientific theory, sources, methods and research aims of the subject in 140 articles. The reference book helps students to orient themselves in the language and thinking of science; but also the archaeologically interested will benefit from reading the manual.

Über mehrere Jahrzehnte sammelte und dokumentierte Ludwig Ohlenroth (1892–1959) italische Terra Sigillata mit Applikenverzierung aus über 100 Museen insbesondere in Deutschland und Italien. Sein unveröffentlichter Katalog umfasst über 800 Einzelmotive mit ausführlichen Beschreibungen und detaillierten Zeichnungen. Darunter finden sich teilweise extrem seltene, oft nur in Einzelstücken bekannte und bislang häufig unpublizierte Motive ebenso wie massenhaft belegte Bilder von Delfinen, Masken oder Rosetten. Auch über 60 Jahre nach Ohlenroths Tod geben seine Aufzeichnungen einen einmaligen Überblick über die Vielfalt und künstlerische Qualität der Applikenverzierung auf italischer Terra Sigillata.
