Although Antiquity itself has been intensively researched, together with its reception, to date this has largely happened in a compartmentalized fashion. This series presents for the first time an interdisciplinary contextualization of the productive acquisitions and transformations of the arts and sciences of Antiquity in the slow process of the European societies constructing a scientific system and their own cultural identity, a process which started in the Middle Ages and has continued up to the Modern Age. The series is a product of work in the Collaborative Research Centre “Transformations of Antiquity” and the “August Boeckh Centre of Antiquity” at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Das Übersetzen ist eine zentrale Arbeits- und Prüfungsform des Lateinunterrichts und -studiums. Dieses Lehrbuch berücksichtigt gleichermaßen Theorie wie Praxis des Übersetzens: Es bietet eine historische Übersicht über Übersetzungstheorien, zeigt verschiedene Übersetzungsmethoden auf und liefert eine kleine Translationsgrammatik des Lateinischen. Auch translationswissenschaftliche und (text-)linguistische Erkenntnisse werden berücksichtigt, sofern sie für Theorie und Praxis des Übersetzens relevant sind. Schülerinnen und Schüler, Studierende, Referendare, Lehrende und Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzer erhalten einen kompakten Überblick, um den Übersetzungsprozess reflektiert betrachten und vollziehen zu können. Der Band enthält zahlreiche Aufgaben und Übungen.

Das Übersetzen aus dem Lateinischen ist wichtigster Lehr- und Prüfungsgegenstand, und zwar überall dort, wo diese Sprache vermittelt wird. Auch kommt dem Übersetzen aus dem Lateinischen in der Wissenschaft eine immer größere Bedeutung zu: Überhaupt kann nur bei wenigen die Fähigkeit vorausgesetzt werden, das Lateinische flüssig zu lesen. Und vor allem lateinische Quellentexte aus Antike, Mittelalter und Neuzeit werden überwiegend in übersetzter Form rezipiert. Der Band vereint Beiträge aus der Translationswissenschaft, der Übersetzungsforschung, der lateinischen Sprachwissenschaft, der lateinischen Literaturwissenschaft, der Fachdidaktik und der Übersetzungspraxis.
