In der vorliegenden Studie werden die immer wieder zu Unsicherheiten führenden, variierenden Wortformen und Fugenelemente von Substantiven wie, , auf der Basis von 176405282 Einzelanalysen untersucht. Anhand der Analysen werden fünf Regeln für die Wahl von Wortformen und Fugenelementen geprüft: Die Paradigmenregel, die Bedeutungsregel, die Euphonieregel, die Strukturierungsregel und die Gewohnheitsregel. Alle fünf Regeln konkurrieren miteinander. Mal orientieren sich Sprecherschreiber an der einen, mal an der anderen Regel. Die Studie lotet die erstaunlich häufige Varianz vor allem statistisch gründlich aus. Zwar kann auch sie keine zuverlässigen Voraussagen darüber machen, wie Zusammensetzungen im Einzelnen organisiert werden.
