Die wiederkehrende These, die Baiern seien herkunftsmäßig Romanen, wird meist mit Hilfe der tradierten Gewässer- und Ortsnamen antik-romanischer Herkunft zu begründen versucht. Die Autoren analysieren nun diese wenigen Namen des Voralpenraumes zwischen Lech und Enns etymologisch und ermitteln mit Hilfe linguistischer Methoden ihre Eingliederung ins Althochdeutsche. Sie erfolgte bis längstens ins beginnende 9. Jahrhundert, und nur um die Stadt Salzburg lebte das Romanische bis ins 11. Jahrhundert fort. Wie die Masse der Ortsnamen und wie die Dialekte sind die Baiern germanisch-deutscher Herkunft und ist damit die Romanenthese aufzugeben.
