Seit dem 1. April 2004 gibt es an der Theologischen Fakultät in Greifswald das erste deutschsprachige Institut zur Erforschung von Evangelisation und Gemeindeentwicklung. Im Mai 2004 fand in Greifswald eine internationale Konferenz zur Eröffnung statt. Dieser Band führt in Geschichte und Aufbau des Instituts ein und enthält die Vorträge der Konferenz. Paul M. Zulehner provoziert mit der Feststellung, dass das konstantinische Zeitalter vor unseren Augen zu Ende gehe. An die Stelle eines kulturgestützten Christentums müsse nun ein »persongestütztes« und kirchlich eingebundenes Christentum treten. Der Wiener Pastoraltheologe kritisiert die Kirchen, deren Strategie sich häufig im »Downsizing« erschöpfe, aber keine Vision einer veränderten Kirche von morgen zeige. Der pommersche Bischof Hans-Jürgen Abromeit bietet eine ungewöhnliche Perspektive auf die Theologie Dietrich Bonhoeffers. Er skizziert Bonhoeffer als Vertreter einer Missionskirche, der seine Vikare nicht nur anhielt, »Christus zur Entscheidung zu predigen«, sondern ihnen auch Gelegenheit zu volksmissionarischen Einsätzen gab. Christfried Böttrich, Neutestamentler in Greifswald, zeigt den Weg einer Gemeinde in der Minderheit auf, die sich von Gott mit einer Botschaft für die ganze Menschheit betraut sieht. Der Rostocker Praktische Theologe Thomas Klie zeigt, wie der Kirchenraum an sich ein durchaus verständlicher Teil spätmoderner Lebenswelten ist, der eigensinnig Menschen in seine Geschichten verwickeln und so eine durchaus missionarische Bedeutung gewinnen kann. Vervollständigt wird der Band durch eine Bilanz von Johannes Zimmermann, der auf 25 Jahre Gemeindeaufbau-Theologie seit der »Überschaubaren Gemeinde« von Fritz Schwarz blickt, sowie durch zwei Berichte über die missionarische Situation und Strategie der ungarischen Kirche (Lajos Szabó) und der evangelisch-lutherischen Kirche von Amerika (Brent Dahlseng).
