Das Buch vermittelt in der 3. Auflage die rechtlichen Grundlagen in der Heilpädagogik und Heilerziehungspflege weiter umfassend. Seit Erscheinen der 2. Auflage ist die Sozialgesetzgebung rasant vorangeschritten, weshalb das Lehrbuch grundlegend überarbeitet und aktualisiert wurde. Von herausragender Bedeutung war das Inkrafttreten des Bundesteilhabegesetzes, dessen Umsetzung sowohl im Recht als auch in der Praxis noch lange nicht abgeschlossen ist. Seine Auswirkungen auf das Recht der Rehabilitation wurden komplett eingearbeitet. Auch das Pflegerecht wurde vollständig überarbeitet; das Recht der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe greift das Kinder- und Jugendstärkungsgesetz und das Betreuungsrecht das Gesetz zur Reform des Vormundschafts- und Betreuungsrechts auf. Das Lehrbuch ist auf dem Rechtsstand vom Herbst 2021; zum großen Teil wurden auch Änderungen, die erst in den kommenden Jahren in Kraft treten, bereits mit berücksichtigt und durch besondere Hinweise kenntlich gemacht.
