Anton Gogeisl (1701 – 1771) And his Time

Produktform: Buch

The book is a monograph on the Jesuit missionary Anton Gogeisl (1701 - 1771). It is the revised German version with additions of letters written by him (also in transcribed version), including a tribute to the person of Anton Gogeisl, now translated into English. The content also illuminates the circumstances of the time. He came from Siegenburg in Southern Germany and spent the rest of his life in Beijing from 1739. Due to his mathematical and astronomical knowledge, he spent more than 30 years in the Empire of the Dragon, in addition to his missionary activities, as a staff member at the imperial court. He was chief astronomer at the observatory and was awarded the Mandarin title as a sign of his membership of the highest imperial civil service. He decisively promoted the process of the Christianization of Korea by "looking after Korean delegations in China" for many years. With it he belonged to the most important Jesuit missionaries of the last half of the 18th century in the time shortly before the abolition of the Society of Jesus. The book understands itself as search for traces to his life stations and provides a number of biographical data!weiterlesen
