One of the key issues in the development of modern mechatronic systems is the strict integration of mechanical, control, electrical, electronic and sofware aspects from the very beginning of the earliest design phases. The present habilitation thesis contains an overview of the author's activities and scientific contributions to Model-Bases Mechatronic Design. According to general considerations on engineering design four key research topics (namely process models, design theories and methods, product models, tools) in the product development process will be identified.
