Ancient Fables – Sour Grapes?

New Approaches

Produktform: Buch / Einband - flex.(Paperback)

For a long time, research into the ancient fable, a genre that substantially influenced the development of modern literature, was limited almost exclusively to questions of textual transmission or the reception of motifs. In recent years, however, classicists have expanded these approaches by looking at fables as literary works of art with an innate poetic and cultural value. This current wave of research has prompted renewed interest in ancient fables as expressions of erudite virtuosity and as treasure troves of cultural information. As a result, novel ways of approaching these unique texts have emerged. This volume collects and presents recent examples of these new directions. With contributions on both the genre at large and on specific case-studies, the volume serves as a reflection of the current trends in ancient fable scholarship.
