Antike Musterblätter
Wirkkartons aus dem spätantiken und frühbyzantinischen Ägypten
Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)
The use of models and pattern sheets in Antiquity is still much discussed among scholars. While lost for other works of art, a considerable number painted on papyrus and used in textile work shops has been found in Egypt. Such cartoons on papyrus are preserved from Antique, Byzantine and Islamic times. They have been found in rubbish heaps at different places in the Nile valley. The considerably high number of items proves that cartoons have not been some thing extraordinary but had been a familiar instrument in textile production. The present publication emerges from a detailed study of these models with special focus on common characteristics of the patterns as well as on workshop practices transferring the information on papyrus to woven textiles. In the second part the model sheets are compared with woven textiles daily use thus making evident the way of transformation from model to textile. The catalogue raisonné is concluded by 48 colour plates. The publication gives new insight not only into the day to day work of a textile workshop but also into general workshop practices in other fields of art such as mosaists or sculptors. Thus the publication is not restricted to textile specialists only but touches questions of archaeology, art history and economic history as well.
