The Tagalog language offers several constructions to encode information-structural properties. One of these constructions is ay-inversion, which is often labeled a topic-marking construction, but is actually far more versatlie. Nuhn begins with a survey of the uses of this construction in fieldwork data and several novels. Then, Van Valin’s Role and Reference Grammar framework is used to present some of the syntactic challenges the construction poses and to model how speakers use it in combination with focus-sensitive particles. The author then turns to the relationship between ay-inversion and anaphora resolution in the context of a case study based on several elicited spoken narratives and finally, and presents detailed findings on the little discussed reversed ang-inversion: a construction combining ay-inversion and the narrow-focus construction, ang-inversion. weiterlesen
