Contributions to a History of Photography in Austria, volume 21 Edited by Monika Faber for Photoinstitut Bonartes, Vienna, and Walter Moser for the Photographic Collection of the Albertina, Vienna Ethnography and anthropology in the late 19th century were dominated by data collecting activities on supposedly vanishing indigenous cultures in all regions of the world, activities that now seem fanatical. The aim was to differentiate ‘typical characteristics’ in order to highlight various lines of development in human history that were at risk of extinction at the time due to the spread of colonialism. For the Austrian research couple Emma and Felix von Luschan, photography also played a key role in these activities. This volume examines the conditions under which the photographs were produced within the context of expeditions and ethnological expositions, and how they were exchanged among scholars and acquired in local commercial studios. First and foremost, however, it is devoted to the life stories of a number of individuals from distant lands who, thus far, had been perceived merely as the representatives of a certain ‘type’.
