Around 30 percent of those unemployed are able to read and write at best at sentence level. This fact significantly hinders their job market integration. The interlinking of occupation-oriented literacy help and measures for active job promotion can increase the job market chances of unemployed functional illiterates. There have, however, to date only been very few course offerings for this target group. A model approach developed by the Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (Forschungsinstitut betriebliche Bildung - f-bb) in collaboration with the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit - BA) is contributing towards closing this gap. Courses are offered in accordance with the AlphaBERUF model approach in close partnership with sponsors of the literacy work, unemployment offices and job centres. The manual describes the entire process from the initial recruitment of participants to the final implementation of the learning concept.
