This book explains the engineering behind biomethane, from gas cleaning processes to the upgrading of clean biogas to biomethane. Biomethane is an underutilized renewable energy source; processed correctly, it has the same chemical properties as natural gas and can be used as a viable alternative. This book addresses all engineering aspects of biomethane, from its production from raw biogas, to its end use. Several processes are shown for effectively cleaning and upgrading the corrosive biogas. Given the advantages of using biomethane close to where it is produced, the book discusses e.g. local transportation options, domestic heating and cooking, and novel small biomethane gas grids in detail. On a larger scale, the injection of biomethane into larger natural gas grids is also covered. In closing, the book explores the engineering involved in using biomethane as a liquid petroleum gas (LPG) replacement in domestic and industrial applications. This biogas book chiefly focuses on the engineering aspects after the chemical process of converting raw organic matter into biogas.
