Amongst the several poetical passages appearing in the so-called Alexander Romance, the one concerning the capture of Thebes and the dramatic contraposition between Alexander and Ismenias the flute-player stands out for its frequent erudite references to mythology, for its unusually sublime language, and, unfortunately, for its very corrupted text.
