This edited volume brings together 15 ethnographic accounts that discuss larger theoretical questions regarding power and authority in the context of the (post)colonial state, of (neo)traditional authority, of claiming space, of conflict and (in)justice, and of contestations of knowledge, focusing on their research in settings including Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
