Challenging European Citizenship
Ideas and Realities in Contrast
Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)
This book provides a critique of the way in which European citizenship is imagined and practiced. The authors set their analysis in its full historical context, leading to a distinction of different manifestations of the European personal status, of which European citizenship is only one. They further question the assessment of European citizenship on the basis of a detailed reconstruction of political, social and economic practice. In particular, they show the extent to which the elimination of formal borders within Europe has come hand in glove with the emergence of new socio-economic boundaries and the strengthening of external borders for third-country nationals. The book concludes with a number of concrete proposals to regenerate the political space in Europe, which the authors consider a necessary condition for the emergence of a genuinely post-national form of membership.
