Coins, Art and Chronology

Essays on the pre-Islamic History of the Indo-Iranian Borderlands

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

This publication includes 24 articles by internationally acknowledged specialists in the fields of history, archaeology, art history, numismatics and philology. As the title indicates, the articles are organised chronologically and methodologically, beginning with the Hellenistic period in Bactria and ending with the pre-Islamic and early Islamic cultures of Central Asia. The greatest number of articles deals with the Kushan and post Kushan periods and problems of chronology from a variety of methodological perspectives.\r\nThis volume represents a valuable significant scientific contribution to the cultural history of pre-Islamic Inner Asia and Northwest India. It presents in every instance the most recent research on new numismatic, archaeological, art historical, and philological discoveries from the Indo-Iranian border areas. In most cases the new evidence presented in these articles was discovered only within the last ten years so that this volume presents for the first time the most recent state of research in a rapidly changing discipline. As such there is no doubt that this volume will serve as a scientific resource for a number of related disciplines for many years to come.\r\nContent: KLIMBURG-SALTER, Deborah E.: From an art historical perspective: problems of chronology in the Kusana period; ALRAM, Michael: Indo-Parthian and early Kushan chronology: the numismatic evidence; BERNARD, Paul: Greek geography and literary fiction from Bactria to India: the case of the Aornoi and Taxila; BOPEARACHCHI, Osmund: Recent coin hoard evidence on pre-Kushana chronology; GÖBL, Robert: The early Kushan kings: new evidence for chronology.
