This book comprehensively analyses and assesses the influence of the banking industry on the EU’s post-crisis reform of banking governance. Charting the policy-making journey from the first reform agenda, to the project of the Banking Union and the 2018 Banking Package, this book uses the interactions between structural, lobbying and political salience determinants to explain the patterns of corporate preferences and influence and how they have affected the eventual reforms. This book examines the success of the European banking industry in re-orientating its goals and lobbying strategy post-crisis in order to strategically shape the reform process. Finding that this success or failure has been in part determined by the political salience of the policies, and the banking industry’s cohesiveness on the issue, the book reflects that the end result has been a Banking Union which will increase structural power and competitiveness for cross-border institutions and core domestic banking sectors, while exacerbating the asymmetries and inequalities of the European Monetary Union. weiterlesen
