The self-perceptions and perceptions of others portrayed in German and Polish literature allow conclusions to be drawn about cultural identity as well as existing stereotypes. Over the past few decades – especially since the developments after 1989 – it can be assumed that a sustained change has taken place in German-Polish relations. This has been accompanied by a partial deconstruction of existing stereotypes and clichés. And with it comes a plea for openness to others, their values and their culture. This change in perspective was not least attributable to the fact that the past was remembered and forgotten in a particular way. As a consequence there has been a growing willingness to consider “the other side with one’s own eyes” (Uwe Johnson). The contributions to this volume demonstrate that in this process literature as well as cinematic productions, drama and the visual arts have played a role that should not be underestimated, especially by depicting ‘stirring experiences’.weiterlesen
