Diatom Monographs / Floristic list of non marine diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) of Iberian Peninsula, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands
Updated taxonomy and bibliography
Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)
This, inevitably, lengthy list compiles studies that have been made over the two centuries of life that continental algology and limnology have enjoyed in Spain. For the systematic ordering we have used the proposal of Lange - Bertalot and Krammer in the four volumes of Süsswasserflora, which is probably the most widely consulted. Diatom nomenclature, particularly since Round et al. study has undergone constant and rapid modification. At the present moment two (at least) different taxonomic systems, each supported by an eminent school of distomists, are in use wíth no unanimous opinion on the part of diatomists and ecologists as to which is best. In many cases, two ways of denominating many species exist, although this practice has been criticised (Lange - Bertalot 2001).In this situation, we have opted to consider both systems. In any case, the index mentions all the denominations used to facilitate any kind of search. If it is not complete, it will at least serve as a beginning and be of help to those interested to learn more about diatom distribution in Spain. Moreover, the environmental richness of the Iberian Pensinsula, the Balearics and
Canary Islands, which contain systems of acidic fresh water, soft, hard and brackish waters of different characteristics, mean that this volume will probably be of wider interest and appeal to all those concerned with biodiversity.
