Dissonant Heritages and Memories in Contemporary Europe
Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)
This open access volume critically discusses contemporary challenges of heritage and memory regimes in Europe, and to offer new modes of understanding them. Postmillennial Europe is faced with various political, economic, social, and humanitarian challenges influencing how native and ‘new’ Europeans deal with their past, present, and future in/of Europe, and how they build their identities. How is the dissonance of heritages and memories and their capacity to create consonance dealt with in Europe in the age of break-up of grand narratives and at a time in which the continent is facing various transformations commonly labeled as ‘crises’ in European political and media discourses? The volume answers this question by exploring the dissonances of heritages and memories in relation to a variety of timely topics, such as: internal and external border-making and border-crossing in Europe; migrant and post-migrant experiences; East–West and center–periphery divisions; Europe’s colonial past and its post-colonial criticism; narration and renarration of Europe’s conflictual past; the problematization of the idea of a European heritage and identity in authorized heritage discourses; and the tensions between regional, national, and transnational regimes of Europe.
