Produktform: Buch

This book is an outcome of teaching phonetics and phonology to graduate and postgraduate students in the University of Sana'a and Taibah University for more than twenty years. During this time, it has been felt that a coursebook with extensive Arabic and English exercises in phonetics and phonology is vitally important. The book covers phonetics and phonology syllabus most Arab students need to deeply understand how the two languages work in segmental and suprasegmental levels. Phonetic symbols used in this book are based on the International Phonetic Alphabet Chart (IPA). The book discusses segmental phonetics, vocal organs and it provides a detailed description of English consonants and vowels with a comparison between Arabic and English consonants and vowels. The book also defines phonology and draws clear distinction between phonology and phonetics. It also discusses phonemes and allophones with examples from Arabic and English with extensive exercises on broad and narrow transcription. The book discusses syllable structure of English and Arabic as well as the phonological processes such as assimilation, dissimilation, deletion, vowel reduction, epenthesis, and metathesis in the two languages.
