The Arab Uprisings that began in 2011 have generated significant new patterns of human movement, both in the MENA region and in the broader Mediterranean. This book investigates the interrelationships between revolution and migration and considers the short-term impacts of migrant arrivals in MENA countries and Europe, as well as possible long-term impacts of the revolution on migration patterns and the evolution of Euro-Mediterranean relations. The book also assesses the impact of migration on the revolutions and the politics of origin countries, looking at how migration may act as “safety valve” for regimes to eliminate discontent, as well as the possible effects of economic and “political” remittances. A core argument of the book is that that migration and revolution are often driven by the same factors—socio-economic pressure and political marginalization, among others—and thus can interact closely with one another.
