Employment flexibility is a very heatedly debated topic in Germany. It is usually mentioned in the context of labor market phenomena like non-standard employment, the increasing delegation of responsibility and risk to employees as well as the polarization and debordering of working hours. While employers tend to see employment flexibility as beneficial for their firms, employees and trade unions are mostly concerned with the potential downsides of employment flexibility, such as perceived increasing pressure at work and endless working hours.
While several potential determinants of rising employment flexibility have been suggested in the literature, this doctoral thesis empirically investigates the role of firm age for the organization of work as well as employers’ choice of employment forms.
