Josephus is one of the most well-studied figures from ancient history, but his influence on artworks from Roman Antiquity and the early Middle Ages had been largely unexplored. Over the past half century “a veritable Josephus industry has emerged, with regular international colloquia, a burgeoning number of publications, and major commentaries on individual works. Despite such widespread interest in Josephus and a few preliminary articles on artworks associated with his output in separate treatments, no in-depth investigation of the surviving material from the first millennium had been undertaken.
