This study assesses the force-induced attitudes towards the English language in Southeast Asia as contemporarily found on the level of the government and among individuals. It employs an innovative, multidisciplinary approach and uses a dedicated explicative model as its framework. The exhaustive database for the case study ‘Philippines’ was compiled on the basis of a detailed historical analysis, interviews with local experts and a questionnairebased survey across four geographically spread urban areas. I feel deeply indebted to my supervisor, Professor M. Hellinger, Head of the English Linguistics Department of the J. W. Goethe-University of Frankfurt for her continuous guidance and most valuable support. Similarly, I wish to express my sincere thanks to Professor F.
