Friedrich Seeßelberg (1861-1956), professor of architecture in Berlin was one of the leading protagonists of the ›Völkische Bewegung‹ in Germany, which emphasized the special importance of race, nation, tribe, region and language. In 1907 he founded the ›Werdandi-Bund. Bund für deutsche Würde und deutsches Wesen‹. Its aim was the „Erneuerung des Deutschtums“ (renewal of Germanness) with the help of art. This study examines Seeßelberg's life, his scientific work, his academic teaching, his voluntary activities and his relationship to National Socialism. Seeßelberg's view of the key concepts of his work ›Volk‹ and ›Kunst‹ are also described in detail.
