Indigenous Plots in Twenty-First Century Latin American Cinema

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

Within the current context of a greater strength of indigenous movements, of a booming indigenous filmmaking worldwide and of Latin American branding national campaigns embracing cultural diversity, an 'indigenous turn' is taking place in Latin American recent non-indigenous cinema. In the last two decades, a growing number of Latin American award-winning, and mostly transnationally funded, films by non-indigenous filmmakers have focused on the lives and ethnicities of indigenous peoples, bringing their languages, cultures and problems to the global stage and effectively mediating the ways in which audiences across the globe are currently imagining Latin American indigeneity.Through case studies of key films produced between 2006 and 2018 across Latin America, complemented by interviews with the filmmakers, this book maps and analyses this contemporary trend arguing that recent Latin American films are proposing decolonial approaches and attempting to challenge Eurocentric representations, while offering new aesthetics that depart from those of earlier film movements and dialogue with both art-house and mainstream codes. Adopting an interdisciplinary methodology that brings together the fields of cultural studies, anthropology and film and visual studies while establishing lineages and connections with past and present Latin American artistic traditions and political discourses, this timely study aims to assess how non-indigenous transnational cinema is approaching indigeneity in terms of representation and power. The book addresses whether contemporary films are finally undermining the coloniality of power that has shaped western modernity, what the legacy of previous cinematic and other artistic traditions is, and how the transnational element is affecting the dynamics between the local and the global in Latin American cinema.  weiterlesen
