This book is about using the technology now available to connect students from different countries in order to improve their language and intercultural communication skills. It originated in two co-existant circumstances: rising enthusiasm among a few European university lecturers for the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as an educational medium and the granting of EU funding for a Socrates project called ODL - On-line Discipline-specific Language learning - which allowed these enthusiasts to meet and to experiment by actually using the new media in their language classrooms. Our experimentation in the ODL project gave birth to a variety of new projects which, with time, have been given practical application in our respective educational programmes.
