The field of museum studies covers a broad range of aspects, such as from exhibition and collection management, curation, conservation, to economic aspects in the face of cultural political legitimization, to visitor participation and the use of digital tools. Recent criticism towards museums is directed at their distinct mandate to conduct research and to decolonize archives and collections, as well as at their exhibition practices and the museums' infrastructures. Yet, what does it actually mean to »decolonize« an archive or a collection? Which implications does this have on the exhibition development and interpretive strategies, public programming and audience engagement activities? Which role do open access, open data, and »the digital museum« play in this context? This special issue looks at new approaches in museum research, practice, politics, and management. Das Feld der Museumsforschung hat sich unter anderem mit Fragen zu Ausstellungs- und Sammlungsmanagement, kuratorischer Praxis, Wirtschaftlichkeit von Museen sowie dem partizipativen und digitalen »Turn« beschäftigt. Hinzu kommt eine verstärkte Kritik im Hinblick auf Aspekte wie Dekolonialisierung von Archiven, Sammlungen, kuratorischen Praktiken und Organisationsstrukturen. Ganz aktuell beschäftigt sich die Museumswelt verstärkt mit digitalen Vermittlungsformaten und der Rolle von Museen in Krisenzeiten.
