Late Neolithic Landscapes on the Polish Lowland

People, culture and economy in Kujawy - 4th and 3rd millennia BC

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

The Late Neolithic on the Polish Lowland is relatively well-evidenced by sources. However, on the settlement sites investigated so far, most features are in dire repair and are only represented by pottery assemblages and a small series of flint and stone artefacts. Many researchers therefore concentrated on relatively few funerary features, of which some were more or less monumental as was the case with barrows or stone structures. Diagnosing this state of affairs was an incentive to the formulation of an alternative research project into the Late Neolithic settlement, which was part of the Kujawy Research Programme providing for the selection of several testing grounds to be thoroughly explored. One such became Prokopiak's Mount in Opatowice, located in the centre of the Kujawy Plateau. Excavations continued there for over a decade and yielded a huge amount of sources, for the most part relics of settlements or camps. One of the findings was that the Mount had been the most intensively settled by humans in the Late Neolithic. Favourable environmental conditions helped not only artefacts and elements of settlement infrastructure to survive relatively well, but also bioarchaeological sources. Conducted since 2003, the programme of systematic analyses and publications of research results has brought a number of entirely new findings, which have considerably augmented or changed our knowledge of the Late Neolithic communities and their culturallandscapes.weiterlesen
