In May 1999, Gareth Bartley (b. 1954), a lover of ships and the sea who emigrated to the small German state of Saarland in the 1980s, got on his bike to go and visit a few friends and relatives. During a period of just under two years he went round the world, using the bike and various freight vessels. But this is not merely a travel story.
