Memories of Our Fathers

Stories of Suffering, Resistance, Courage and Hope

Produktform: Buch / Einband - flex.(Paperback)

Six contemporary witnesses, former prisoners of the Grini prison camp near Oslo and two of them additionally prisoners of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, speak about their experiences in 1941 to 1945 and their strategies to cope with those experiences – against the backdrop of Viktor Frankl’s theory 'Man’s Search for Meaning' and resilience research. Thus we get a deep insight into the forces and abilities that human beings can mobilise to overcome crises while keeping up hope. Six representatives of the following generation let us know how they perceive their fathers’ experiences and how this has influenced their values and attitudes. All this was initiated by a German who was looking for the traces of her father in Norway after she learned, no more than a few years ago, through Odd Nansen’s diary that her father had also been a prisoner in the camp in Grini from 1943 to 1944. With their moving stories the contemporary witnesses do not only keep the memories of the historical events alive; they also share with us how they developed their coping strategies. Even today we can only benefit from this knowledge how to mobilise our mental power of resistance in difficult situations in life.
