Metal on Merseyside

Music Scenes, Community and Locality

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

This is the first book to explore metal music scenes in the city of Liverpool and the Merseyside region in the North-West of England. Liverpool’s year as Capital of Culture in 2008 (and its subsequent award of UNESCO City of Music in 2015) have served to construct the city and surrounding region as steeped in a particular kind of music heritage. City centre areas have become synonymous with specific music scenes within popular historiography and heritage narratives used to re-brand Liverpool as a city of culture, particularly within the last decade. Yet, ironically, the promotion of a new cultural identity for Liverpool in this period has often involved the privileging of past high profile rock and pop scenes, artists and venues, most notably the internationally renowned Merseybeat era of the 1960s. This book examines rock music scenes that have remained largely invisible within accounts of this crucial period in the area’s recent history, both in popular and academic writing. It will explicate how people understand what they commonly refer to as the Liverpool or Merseyside or ‘scenes’. When doing so it will consider the extent to which those understandings are inflected by Liverpool’s status as a ‘city of music’ – a city that has been overdetermined by historical and heritage-related grand narratives that prioritized other genres, locations and moments. weiterlesen
