This book uses the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City as a lens to look at five years of nation-building projects around the sport mega-event. These have been mostly studied as homogenous government-led strategies, but the preparation period for the Olympics in Mexico and especially the year 1968 highlight the multiplicity of voices behind these exercises. Local governments and their associated networks uses this mega-event for extensive nation building strategies, to reshape citizenship and nationhood. This study takes a bottom-up approach to look at the citizenry’s experiences of the 1968 Olympic Games.
