The architect plans, the builder gives his blessing, the population is presented with the finished result. Fortunately, this planning culture, handed down over many centuries, has changed in recent decades. A pioneer of this development is the architectural office nonconform, based in Austria and Germany. The starting point of their planning is collaborative work with locals. The subsequent results are then further developed with clients, whereby the wishes and ideas of local participants and residents form the basis for further planning steps. In the last 20 years, almost 200 participation projects were developed in this manner—with large and small municipalities, as well as with public and private companies, including a mixed-use residential neighborhood in Upper Bavaria, a revitalized town center in Saarland, and a bright, red main square in Lower Austria.
