This book works to redefine understandings of modernism. Existing discussions of European modernism in literature, painting, and music are confused and inadequate. A key but neglected aspect of modernism is this: the modernists want to address those aspects of lived experience that the received modes of representation in painting, writing, and composing cannot accommodate. Because such realities cannot be represented in a direct, positive way, they must be illuminated by other means.
