Cuban Artist Tomas Marais 1931–2004
This first comprehensive account of the life and work of Cuban exile artist
Tomas Marais (1931–2004) seeks to create awareness of this representative
of Cuban art of the second half of the 20th century, and a member of the
surrealist movement in Paris of the 1960s. The study focuses on the changing
styles, techniques and motifs in Cuba and in the different stations of his exile
(Paris, Venezuela, and the United States). Trained by Cuban masters at Havana’s
academy of art, Escuela de Artes Plasticas de San Alejandro, Marais’ work is
an excellent example of art rooted in the culture of Cuba, but developed in exile.
Marais‘ oeuvre stands as an example of a “Lost Generation” (1960–1980) of
artists in need of acknowledgement in the art history of Cuba.weiterlesen
