This volume fills a gap in the debate on recursion in linguistics by focusing on the use of recursive structure in phonology. It outlines current thinking on the question of what kinds of representation are best suited to recent models of generative phonology. In particular, it considers how the principle of recursion, which has long been a feature of higher levels of linguistic structure, may also be implemented in the phonological representation of single morphemes. The contributors show how the use of recursive phonological structure at the morpheme level can enhance the way recurrent phonological processes are expressed and formalized in different languages. They also consider the link between recursive structure and relational properties, and discuss parallels between recursion in phonology and in syntax.The articles in this volume are arranged into four categories: feature-based recursive dependency (Part I), nucleus-driven recursion (Part II), set theoretic recursion (Part III) and segment-internal recursion (Part IV).
