The book explores the narrative of a group of four-year-old children and their creative journey in a collaboration with an eminent Australian musician. The result was the composing of a set of songs that celebrated their immediate physical surroundings in inner-city Melbourne, Australia. The book showcases young children’s communicative ability and sensitivity to wider issues, which include a respect for Aboriginal culture and custodial responsibility towards the maintenance of a sustainable future for the earth. The children’s ideas are illustrated through music making, singing, dancing, words, drawings and paintings that all provide insights into a world where children are viewed as active citizens and the arts have rights. These multi-modal experiences allow for the interweaving of symbol systems; kinesthetic, visual, aural, graphic and oral. Underlying themes are the importance of the arts, quality learning experiences in the early years, the role of educators and artists in representing the world to young children and the value of lifelong learning, or, “lifeworthy learning”.weiterlesen
