Despite its impressive legacy and the long established scholarly interest it has nourrished, Neoplatonism has until recently been somewhat downplayed in comparison to the indepth and systematic study of earlier Greek philosophers. Yet, having gradually achieved the incorporation of Aristotelianism into Platonism, and without ignoring the achievements of Hellenistic philosophy, this school of thought dominated the intellectual landscape of Greece and Rome through the end of Antiquity, securing the transition from Ancient to Medieval and Renaissance philosophy. The research conducted in recent decades has significantly restored the balance, by demonstrating, among others, the extent to which our understanding of (ancient) philosophy as a whole, and of classical philosophy more especially, is indebted to the Neoplatonic school. This book provides an introduction to the main representatives, key themes, and leading ideas of late antique Platonism as well as a critical guide to the scholarly achievements of the past few decades and to the new lines of study in the field.
