Obesity, Diabetes and Inflammation

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Management

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

Today, obesity is a worldwide epidemic affecting half a billion people. It has been estimated that if current trends continue, by 2050, 60% of males and 50% of females worldwide will be obese. The hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the white adipose tissue caused by overweight and obesity leads to a chronic inflammatory state, which further results in impaired insulin sensitivity and development of diabetes. Currently, the number of people affected by diabetes globally exceeds 400 million (rising more rapidly in low- and middle-income countries). In 2019, diabetes was the ninth leading cause of mortality, with an estimated 1.5 million direct deaths. A large effort in endocrinology research is focused on investigation of the association between obesity, inflammation and diabetes, thus opening the possibilities for selecting specific molecular targets and the development of novel treatments. Although at the present time a number of books on obesity, inflammation or diabetes have been published, there is no book addressing this subject in its entirety, summarizing the existing literature and drawing connections between the state of knowledge on different disciplines concerning obesity, diabetes, and inflammation. This book fills that knowledge gap with chapters addressing the role of inflammation in both obesity and diabetes, its effect on vascular and non-vascular pathologies, oxidative stress, genetic and epigenetic bases, lifestyle factors and mental health, and pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical approaches to management. A concluding chapter presents conclusions and further directions for research.weiterlesen
