Traditionally, privacy studies have focused on liberal democratic societies of the global West, whereas non-democratic contexts have played a marginal role in the discussion of the private and public spheres, not in the least because of political stances of the Cold War era. This volume explores constructions of privacy in late socialist societies by attending to immanent perspectives on the private sphere behind the Iron Curtain and thereby invites to rethink the Cold War rhetoric in regard to socialist landscapes.Contributions on the Soviet Union, late socialist Poland, Romania, Hungary, Lithuania, and East Germany elucidate ideas of privacy that, on the one hand, were culturally, economically and politically specific, and on the other hand, overcame national borders and left an imprint across the Eastern Bloc.
