Based on a case study of a medium-sized U.S. police agency, this book uses the theory of police integrity to provide empirically grounded explanations about the code of silence in the context of police views about policing. It examines the potential effects of individual attitudes of the officer, perceptions of the organizational climate, and officers’ perceptions of the communities they serve on the officer willingness to adhere to the code of silence. The empirical findings can help guide some of the demanded changes, particularly in smaller police agencies.
