This book brings historians, political scientists, Public Administration scholars and sociologists to explore the territorial representatives of the central state. Because prefects are often (and wrongly) said to be a French and Italian institutional exception and because there is no equivalent in the UK, the topic remains under-investigated. The book examines cases from across Europe from Sweden to Turkey, France to Romania, and Italy to Germany.
